SUMMARY: EMISSIONS TRADING SCHEME: WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR PNG?
DESCRIPTION: In contrast to many countries, PNG’s land tenure system is unique and about 93% of the land is owned by customary landowners through kinship. All forest is virtually owned in principle through a classic commons system represented by collective customary clans and tribal groups as holders of rights. The forests in PNG contain some highly commercial valued timbers produced from tree species such as intsia (kwila) and pteropcarpus (nar) that are sought after by logging companies.Unpacking and raising awareness of a carbon market and its intersectional ties with forest governance and state of the forests is the first step to identifying the pros and cons of proliferation of the carbon trading scheme in the country. Please share and/or attend if you're keen to know more about emissions trading and PNG's take on it.
